And thanks for stopping by! My work reflects my desire to add some whimsy, enchantment and beauty to the world. It is my way of sharing a bit of my heart. I love the laughter and smiles, but I am also drawn to the quiet, intimate moments that are filled with emotion. My goal is to capture the essence of your wedding day, all the little things that come together to paint the big picture.

welcome to my blog...

I pre-ordered the Canon 5D Mark IV the day it came out, which means I have had it in my hands for over a month now. I figured it was time to give you guys my impressions on it. I’ve shot three weddings with it now and while I have only edited some of the files, I think I have dealt with them enough to give you my opinion!

3 Things I love about the Canon 5D Mark IV

  1. Live View Focus – I LOVE this feature. You can now tap on the Live View screen to focus… and you can do this in video mode too, which is huge! One thing to watch out for is that if your camera is focusing during video, the audio will be less usable as you’ll hear the focusing mechanism. I am planning on getting a mic that pairs with my phone instead. I will say, I thought this would be useful for shooting from above as well. I tend to blind shoot a lot to get a higher perspective, but it turns out you can’t focus in Live View if you have Back Button Focusing on. I may need to read the manual a bit more to figure out an easy way to get around this!
  2. Wifi – I didn’t think I would like this as much as I do! It’s so convenient to be able to send a photo to my phone from my camera for a quick sneak peek. I can even put my card from my Mark III into the Mark IV and send a photo from that camera too! Plus, the app allows me to control the camera from my phone which is awesome for self portraits. I will definitely be playing with this more once I get a little more time.
  3. Size and Weight – It is just slightly smaller and is also lighter than the Mark III, which is really nice. The best part is the layout of the buttons stayed the same, so it feels pretty seamless to switch back and forth between the Mark IV and Mark III. I struggled with this a bit when I was shooting with a Mark II and Mark III, so it’s nice to see that smooth transition

2 Things I… don’t love about the Canon 5D Mark IV

  1. Color – I have heard mixed reviews on this, but for me the colors just aren’t quite as pretty as the Mark III! They are more green and cooler. I shifted the colors in camera and it helps a bit, but I still don’t like the colors as much. I’m hoping that I’ll eventually adjust and get better at editing my new files! Other people have raved about the colors and love them, but I have also had friends return their cameras because the colors were just too off!
  2. Megapixels – I might be in the minority here, but I wish the file sizes weren’t so big! I don’t really care about the megapixels and would rather have the smaller files, haha. I haven’t turned Dual Pixel Raw on partly because LR doesn’t support it, but also because the files are already big without doubling them in size!

I have NOT done any testing on the dynamic range of the camera compared to the Mark III or looked closely at the ISO handling. If I do, I’ll post the results here for you guys though!

And because this post is useless without photos… here are some from the self portrait shoot I did to test out my 5D Mark IV. Note to self, don’t forget that sunlight coming through greenery gives crazy color casts! I nearly threw in the towel with these photos, which is why they are mostly in black and white, haha.

Hope this helps you if you’re trying to decide whether to upgrade to the Canon 5D Mark IV!
